A local's guide to Edinburgh & the Lothians

Activities Guide

Most activities are catered for fairly close by.  Mountain bikers are well provided for not only with the Pentland Hills on Eastside Cottage's doorstep but also with the world-class mountain biking tracks at Glentress and Innerleithen only a 30 minute drive away. Both courses offer many different purpose-built routes from novice runs to downhill "black"  runs. Bikes can be hired locally or you're welcome to bring your own.

There are an abundance of golf courses available locally, but if you are up for a challenge, Open Championship courses are now accessible to visitors - more information can be found here. Take a day trip to the historic town of St. Andrews - full of local shops and eateries as well as the famous golf course!

  • Catch your supper in a local loch
  • Climbing arena at Ratho in a disused quarry

Catch a fish for supper in one of the local lochs , or organise a few days' salmon fishing on the river Tweed with a guide or instructor. Everything from Gorge walking and Whitewater rafting to sphereing and quad riding is available with a daytrip to Perthshire, but for the adrenaline junkies who fancy staying closer to home why not try surfing, hot air ballooning or climbing in Edinburgh's International Climbing Arena built in a disused quarry!
