Delightful gardens, outdoor movies, International Film Festivals, the Royal Highland Show & GIN! Something for everyone this month in the city!

Events

Gardening Scotland (3rd - 5th June at the Royal Highland Centre)

The Gardening Scotland Show is bursting with inspirational ideas, beautiful planting displays and expert advice. It is the biggest plant fair in Scotland offering everything from tips and tricks on how to get started, to expert insight on how to get the very best from your outdoor space.

There will be lots of fun for families with a dedicated ‘Big Back Garden’ area featuring its biggest ever range of activities to keep children and families entertained and inspired with outdoor ideas. Little ones will also be able to brush up on their gardening skills with 'grow your own' activities.

Festivals

Film Fest in the City (10th - 12th June in St Andrew’s Square)

In the build up to the 70th Edinburgh International Film Festival (see below), St Andrew Square will once again be transformed into a outdoor movie theatre showing a full programme from cult classics to family favourites & epic blockbusters. Sit back with a glass of vino & take your pick from the delicious local street food stands in the gardens. Just don’t forget the picnic blanket!

The Edinburgh International Film Festival (15th - 26th June at the Edinburgh Filmhouse)

Intimate in its scale yet ambitious in its scope, the Edinburgh International Film Festival seeks to spotlight the most exciting, innovative new film talent and promote the best in international cinema. 

What's On at EIFF 2016
This year's festival will host a number of must-see events and screenings in celebration of its 70th Edition. 
Highlights include:
- The world premier of Tommy’s Honour, based on the true story of golfing pioneer and Tom Morris - shot entirely on location in Scotland - will open the Festival on 15th June.
- Special 'In Person' Events with Kim Cattral (16th June) and Kevin Smith (22nd June)
- A 30th anniversary screening and world premier of the newly 4K restored, 80s classic Highlander on 18th June 
- A special screening of Steven Spielberg’s legendary E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, accompanied by John Williams’ iconic score performed live by Royal Scottish National Orchestra on 25th June 
- Gillies MacKinnon’s much anticipated remake of the iconic Scottish Comedy Whisky Galore! will close the festival on 26th June

Edinburgh Juniper Gin Festival (10th - 12th June at Summerhall)

Returning for the third year, the Juniper Festival will impress with an exciting array of glorious gins made in Scotland and further afield. Sixty varieties will be on offer including local favourites Pickering's & Edinburgh Gin. Throughout the festival you'll have the chance to try tasters and meet the distillers who'll tell you more about it! Look out for fantastic Gin Talks and enjoy the cocktails and tasty food stalls.

The Royal Highland Show (23rd - 26th June at the Royal Highland show ground, Ingliston)

For four days every June, families flock to the Royal Highland Show to touch, taste, see and hear the very best rural Scotland has to offer by way of entertainment, outdoor living & countryside, shopping, food & drink and the finest farmyard animals.

Whether you want to spend your time browsing the mouthwatering Scottish produce in the food hall, meeting the heavy horses face to face or watching everything from farriery & shearing to falconry or duck herding there is literally something for everyone. Top tip: For children especially the cattle shed & cheeky goats come highly recommended!
