What’s On in Edinburgh May 2012

Make the most of the bank holidays throughout May. The 7th is the May Day holiday and the 21st is Victoria Day. Use one of them to visit the newly refurbished Scottish National Portrait Gallery’s Farmscapes exhibition running until the 3rd of June.  The Magnum photographer Stuart Franklin was commissioned by the Gallery to capture the diversity of agricultural production in Scotland.  Franklin's spectacular images, recording everything from allotments to fisheries, island crofts to large estates, make for a beautiful patchwork of the rich Scottish landscape.

If you are holidaying with the family, consider taking part in the Imaginate Festival in Edinburgh from the 7th until the 14th.  Imaginate is an arts organisation that promotes and develops the performing arts for children and young people.  Think of it as a mini Edinburgh festival specifically designed for children from 18 months to 18 years!

As the largest and most successful performing arts festival for children and young people in the UK, the Festival is a unique opportunity for children (and their families) to see the best children’s theatre the world has to offer.
To book or for more information and programs see the website: Imaginate

There is also plenty of theatre for grown-ups with the Shakespeare's Globe production of Anne Boleyn running from the 8th to 12th at the festival theatre, closely followed by the Scottish Opera’s Tosca at the end of the month.

If you are here without the kids and fancy a taste of the amber nectar a brand new Edinburgh event might take your fancy.  On the 26th and 27th the Edinburgh Whisky Stramash opens it’s doors for the first time.  Held at The Surgeon’s Hall in Edinburgh, a beautiful and dramatic venue, a Stramash ticket allows you to sample an amazing range of different whiskies, combined with entertainment, murder-mystery and your own bespoke whisky cocktail too.

The Stramash will be held on three sessions on the 26th and 27th. Saturday 26th of May 2012 12pm – 4pm, Saturday 26th of May 2012 5pm – 9pm, Sunday 27th of May 2012 1pm – 5pm.

It looks to be a fun afternoon or evening for the whisky lover.  For more information on the whiskies on offer and the entertainment on the day see the website where you can also buy tickets at £25.00 each.

Perhaps not an event to combine with the one above, the Edinburgh Marathon Festival starts on the 26th of the month with the 10k, 5k and Junior Marathons. This is followed on the 27th with the Edinburgh Marathon and the Scottish Half Marathon.  Edinburgh has just been rated the fastest marathon in the UK with a course elevation drop of 40 metres to help you on your way. So if you are looking for a personal best or just a great race, this is the place.

For entries, information and goodie bags see the website. Whatever your abilities there is a race for everyone, even if it is just a personal best round the shops before the more energetic members of the party cross the finish line!
